WHAT IS IN VITRO FERTILISATION?

In vitro fertilization means fertilization of oocytes picked-up with sperms obtained in laboratory conditions outside the body and transfer of embryos obtained to the uterus after 2 to 5 days. First baby born after IVF is Louise Brown in England, in 1978. Much progress occurred in the field after 1990.

Actually, thousands of couples have babies born after use of assisted reproductive technologies. IVF was first used for patients with permanent damage to the fallopian tubes due to infection or surgery, but shortly after, it has been used for other causes of infertility.

WHAT IS INFERTILITY?

Fecundity rate for healthy couples is around 20 to 25% for each month. Pregnancy requires several factors:

• Proper ovulation
• Normal sperm parameters
• Appropriate uterine cavity
• At least one anatomically normal, proper functioning fallopian tube

STEPS IN VITRO FERTILISATION TREATMENT

1. Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation

First step of IVF treatment is to obtain good quality oocytes. Several hormon preparations are being used to develop oocytes. Purpose of these preparations is to obtain more oocytes and embryos of good quality and to increase pregnancy rates. Various protocols are being used.
