In vitro fertilization means fertilization of oocytes picked-up with sperms obtained in laboratory conditions outside the body and transfer of embryos obtained to the uterus after 2 to 5 days. First baby born after IVF is Louise Brown in England, in 1978. Much progress occurred in the field after 1990.
Actually, thousands of couples have babies born after use of assisted reproductive technologies. IVF was first used for patients with permanent damage to the fallopian tubes due to infection or surgery, but shortly after, it has been used for other causes of infertility.
Actually, IVF is being used successfully for treatment of infertility associated with endometriosis, male factor or unexplained infertility. Especially, ICSI, which is a newer technique, provides solution for severe male factor or even azospermia in which sperm can be obtained after TESE.
