Travel During Pregnancy

TRAVEL DURING PREGNANCY

All pregnant women can travel during the last times of pregnancy if they respect several easy rules. Best time for travel is early weeks of pregnancy. Shortest travel is the best. Following rules should be respected to avoid complications:

    DURING TRAVEL
  • take short walks every 2 hours
  • wear large and comfortable clothes
  • eat food that will not increase your nausea
  • have regular meals
  • increase your fluid intake
  • have regular sleep
  • have your medical records with you
  • consult your physician

 

If you will travel abroad, consult your medicin. He will help you decide whether such a trip is safe for you. He will explain what measures you should take.

Water and new food are dangerous when you travel abroad. You may easily get tourist’s diarrhea. Such a condition may be dangerous for a pregnant.

  • consume water in bottles
  • get your dishes clean
  • do not use ice in beverages
  • do not consume uncooked meat
  • be sure your vegetables and fruits are well cleaned and washed
  • if you get diarrhea consume enough fluid and consult a physician

 

Malaria: The infection spreads via mosquitos. It causes influenza like symptoms and anemia. It may cause stil birth and low birth weight in pregnant patients. If a pregnant travels to an area where malaria is common, every precaution to avoid mosquito bite should be taken.

Vaccines: For some countries, vaccination for certain diseases is obligatory. Before a trip, you should learn if there is such a vaccine for that country.

Try not to travel more than 5-6 hours in a car. Keep your security belt fastened during the whole trip. Some mothers may fear security belts might harm the fetus but this is not true unless the accident is grave. Every pregnant woman should keep her security belt fastened in each trip.

Airplane trip is usually safe during pregnancy. Pregnant women can travel by airplanes up to 36 weeks of pregnancy.

  • for long distance flights, pregnant women should get mobilized every 2 hours
  • have light meals to have a comfortable flight.
  • have a good rest after the trip
