A healthy pregnancy requires a healthy preconceptional period. Thus, all women should be screened for chronic diseases before getting pregnant. Other items to care are as follows:
- smoking should be abandonned
- ideal weight should be obtained before getting pregnant
- toxoplasma, rubella, hepatitis should be screened
- thyroid function tests should be performed
- husbands of women carrier for thalassemia, sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis should be screened for these diseases
- women should be supplied by 400 mcg folic acid to prevent neural tube defects. Women with a history of child born with a neural tube defect should be supplied by 4 grams of folic acid daily.
